Graffiti is not only a form of gang communication, it is also the most visible form of gang criminal activity. It can be seen in neighborhood parks and on buildings, fences, and retaining walls. Graffiti identifies the gang, its members and its territory, it issues warnings and challenges to rival gangs. Most importantly it glorifies the gang and make their existence well known.
One of the first indicators that gang activity is present in a community is the surfacing of graffiti in that community.
It is important to the Community to remove graffiti as soon as possible.
Prior to the removal of the graffiti follow the three R’s:
- Report - File police report
- Remove - as soon as possible
Within the gang culture, graffiti plays a very important role. Graffiti is used to advertise (represent), challenge, mark turf, and to send messages. The appearance of graffiti in the community is Irrefutable Evidence of the presence of gangs in that area. It is not unusual to find the name of the perpetrator posted at the scene of a murder, and at times graffiti is also used to eulogize the slain gang member.
Gang graffiti showing disrespect towards a rival gang will be:
-
Upside down • Crossed out • Inverted
-
Disrespects rival gangs symbols
-
